In Tony Perez’s The Dragon and The Eagle, former Delta operator James Chase now serves as the personal security officer for Secretary of Defense Michael Andrews. When China fires on the USS John S. McCain during a naval patrol in the South China Sea, surviving American sailors are taken prisoner, and Washington moves toward war. President David Thomas orders Andrews to prepare the military response, placing him at the center of a crisis that reaches from the Pentagon to Taiwan. Chase’s assignment changes from routine protection to a fight against Chinese agents already operating inside the United States. After a bombing near the White House and an attack inside the Pentagon, Chase must keep Andrews alive while the government prepares a strike that could determine the future balance of power across the Pacific and the world.
Tony Perez’s The Dragon and The Eagle is a military thriller, and James Chase is a protagonist I immediately wanted to root for. One thing I have to point out is that Perez, mercifully, turns to an elite Army SOA and not the Navy SEALs. Finally, an author who isn't prone to tired tropes! This leads to a sense of scale within a full conflict. The author always comes back to a person in the room. When Andrews watches the USS John C. Stennis burn from a Pentagon command screen, the author keeps the war linked to the men flying above the Pacific, especially Leon Anderson in his F-35C. Perez also makes Project Athena work because the cyber strike grows naturally from the military planning already in motion. By the time Andrews opens the door to the Knights Templar, the author has turned a modern war story into a larger mission for Chase, and every brilliant page is a testament to Perez's skill as a writer. Very highly recommended.
