The Drowning Man is a fast-paced suspense novel by Sara Vinduska. Trent Barlow is a hero, a decorated firefighter, and a kidnapping victim. After watching his best friend, Eddie, drown as a child, Trent is haunted by whether or not he could have done more to save him. Eddie’s mother, Caroline, thought so and decides to enact a sort of twisted revenge against Trent with the help of a hired hit man, Simon. Detective Lora Tate is Trent’s savior when she manages to reach him just in time and save him from death. Trent is plagued by nightmares and struggles to adjust until he starts to fall for Lora, the pair entering into a highly passionate relationship. However, Simon is still out there, blaming Lora for Caroline’s mental state. Will Lora manage to save herself this time, or will Simon take away the one woman Trent has ever loved?
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The plot flows beautifully, taking the reader on a whirlwind ride. Miss Vinduska clearly did her research on how a crime victim reacts after experiencing such trauma. As someone who works with crime victims, I appreciated those details, showing that survivors of traumatic crime do not bounce back immediately after the event, and taking care to show that the impact of crime is truly horrifying at times. Although I found some of the things Lora did impulsive, I admired her greatly as a female lead character. She was rough around the edges, but soft underneath, a beautiful match for Trent. I loved the added spice of fiery romance between the pair. The Drowning Man by Sara Vinduska is very well-written, well thought out, and definitely worthwhile as a weekend read.
