Author Biography

Gail Brenner, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist, blogger, and speaker who joyfully helps people discover that suffering is optional. Through investigating her own experience, and working with clients for over 25 years, she has discovered how to unravel common problems of everyday life to reveal the deepest acceptance and peace. Gail has authored many published articles on coping with stress and chronic medical illness. She has special expertise working with older adults and their families, bringing clear seeing and compassion to the transitions of aging, death, and dying. Her offerings point to realizing that the happiness you seek is already here. It's absolutely possible, in your own experience, to fully live this ordinary, extraordinary, precious experience of life.

The End of Self-Help by author Dr. Gail Brenner is a modern self-help book with an inspiring twist. Brenner suggests that individuals have the power within themselves to find peace and happiness NOW, and not after undergoing extensive (and often expensive) self-help therapy. The author goes on to explain her views on the self-help industry as a whole; describing its core objective as making people feel damaged and flawed, in need of professional help in order to become a functional and happy person. Brenner states, “But what if this inadequate self isn’t who you are? What if it’s possible, at any moment, to be happy and free?” The book takes readers on a journey of self-exploration, starting with finding yourself, saying “yes!” to life, changing negative views and habits, and ultimately empowering readers to find the life they always wanted within themselves.

I found The End of Self-Help to be a refreshing take on self-help and personal growth. The book features an added bonus with an “Exploration” section at the end of each chapter, listing several introspective questions for readers to consider. I think this book would work best if readers read one chapter each morning and then apply the principles, thoughts and exploration questions to their life throughout the day. Brenner does a thorough job of explaining to readers how to help themselves with informative, concise and easy-to-follow directions. She not only lists what to do but also gives encouragement (for shortcomings) and motivation (to keep following the path to a more satisfying life). I would recommend The End of Self-Help by author Dr. Gail Brenner to anyone looking to increase personal peace and happiness.
