The Exorcist’s Apprentice by Mark Lukens is very engaging and definitely a novel for supernatural and horror fans to savor. Paul Lambert is a descendant of a long line of Investigators for the Church, and he is only sent to the very worst cases of possessions. He has learned his gifts and unorthodox techniques from his father, which is frowned upon by most priests. The story opens with the exorcism of 17-year-old Julia Whittier, which has been going on for over thirty-six hours with no sign of success.
The pace is fast from the get go; terror and suspense are already present from chapter one. I’m impressed with Paul’s perseverance in handling exorcisms, even when things get out of hand. However, Julia Whittier’s exorcism is far more difficult and the demons are far more sinister than Paul imagined. The situation gets much worse and now the demons are after his family; his ex-wife Rachael and his children, 17-year-old Danny and 14-year-old Lisa.
The plot twist is excellent. I find it easy to root for Danny, who also has the same admirable resolve like his father, and agrees to follow in Paul’s footsteps after the horror he’s been through. Yet the first assignment for him and his father as a team at a haunted house in a remote corner of upstate New York is much more horrifying than he would have expected. Evocative prose makes reading this novel as easy as watching a film. The ending hints at a possible sequel and I’ll keep an eye out for it. Overall, a praiseworthy work from Lukens.
