Chuck Morgan’s The Eye of the Navigator: Kealoha Island Thrillers Book 2 is a gripping, action-packed conspiracy thriller set in Hawaii. Detective Leilani Kealoha of the Honolulu Police Department is under intense time pressure to find the perpetrator(s) of heists from four upscale resorts in Oahu. The heists took place within a matter of a few weeks, and a murder occurred at the last one. Special Agent Isaac Torres of the FBI, an expert in financial fraud investigations, teams up with Detective Leilani to unravel the growing complexity of the crimes. An ancient Hawaiian symbol of a spiral petroglyph is left at each of the four crime scenes. Traditionally, the spiral petroglyph, the Eye of the Navigator, was a guiding symbol. But the message of the spiral at the crime scenes is not a peaceful one; rather, it seems to convey some underlying and dangerous threat. The story twists and turns, and the suspense and the tension remain sky-high till the very end.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Eye of the Navigator for its memorable characters and tight and exciting storyline. I particularly liked the character development of Detective Leilani Kealoha and Special Agent Isaac Torres. Both characters spring to life right from the outset, as the story plunges straight away into the investigation of the resort heists. Both are courageous, committed to keeping the investigation ongoing regardless of the risks to their lives. I liked the different skills and abilities each brings to the investigation. I liked the details because the scenes, the challenges, and the dangers brought out strongly and vividly the way in which Leilani and Torres worked together and protected each other. I was hooked into the story because of these fantastic details, as well as by the tight prose and dialogue that capture the emotions and fast-changing crime scenes. I thoroughly enjoyed the roles of two other key characters, Leilani’s ten-year-old son Kai, and Leilani’s mother Naalei. For me, the story turned into a dynamic psychological thriller, and the spiral petroglyph into a never-ending spider’s web. I highly recommend Chuck Morgan’s The Eye of the Navigator to fans of detective and high-octane crime thrillers.
