The Fairest of Them: Rae Hatting Mysteries, Book 2 is a romantic suspense novel written by Heather Osborne. For the last three years, someone’s been killing women in Mendocino County, California, and then dressing them up as fairytale characters. The latest victim was found in MacKerricher Park with a first edition copy of Goldilocks and the Three Bears peeking out of a pocket of the starched white pinafore the killer had dressed her in. The police have been stumped by the serial killings, which seem to occur every three months. Detective Lucas Thompson has been working the case of two years without any success, but he’s still a bit unnerved when an FBI profiler is called in for assistance. Dr. Melinda Rawlings is not exactly what he expected, and his initial hostility is swiftly transformed into grudging admiration as she’s immediately able to assess that the murders are being committed by a man/woman team. She’s also suggesting that the reason no one has ever reported the victims as missing is because they’re from another country, which proves to be the case. Their joint investigation, however, brings them to the attention of the killers, and their lives are in jeopardy.
Heather Osborne’s romantic suspense novel, The Fairest of Them: Rae Hatting Mysteries, Book 2, is finely plotted and highly entertaining. While this is the second book in Osborne’s Rae Hatting Mysteries, the author includes just enough background information to allow readers new to her series to enjoy this book on its own. This book is listed as a romantic suspense story, but it has a strong police procedural element which should make it appealing to fans of that genre as well. Osborne’s plot is fast-paced, and her characters quickly began to feel like old, familiar friends. I also appreciated the Palm Springs, Mendocino County and San Francisco settings found in The Fairest of Them. Osborne picked some of the most lovely places in California for her story, which was a very nice touch indeed. I was impressed with this work and plan on backtracking to the first book in the series, Crushed Gardenias. The Fairest of Them: Rae Hatting Mysteries, Book 2 is highly recommended.
