Written in rhyming couplets, the bright and comforting picture book, The Flying Bed, written by K.S. Dwyer and illustrated by the multi-award-winning Richa Kinra, tells of how a young girl prepares for bed, where she is read a story by her grandmother. Prompted by her grandmother's stories, she imagines that her bed is transformed into one on which she can soar, in her grandmother's comforting presence, into the rest of the galaxy, where she encounters the different planets in turn. Seated on her bed, together with her grandmother, she flies past the moon, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars.

The self-confidence that the small girl exudes, which is captured in her realization that she is “the pilot of … [her] … very best dreams”, should be sufficient to inspire any youngster to dream about what awaits them as they meet with the multiple wonders of the world that lie beyond the comfort of their own home. The two distinct worlds of artistic dreaming and scientific exploration are neatly blended in K.S. Dwyer’s The Flying Bed. This colorful and vibrant early reader is filled with full-page illustrations by Richa Kinra, ranging from warm domestic interiors to the dazzling splendors of outer space. The warmth of the relationship between grandmother and grandchild shines through the text. The normalcy of their home is contrasted with the spectacular wonders of the universe in such a way that it is likely to encourage any child to wish to explore extraterritorial wonders still further.
