Victor Gates returns from the war in Haiti to a hero's welcome at his home in Philadelphia. Despite the media buzz surrounding his military exploits, Victor only wants to return to the ordinary civilian life he remembers with his friends Rocky, Eli, and potential sweetheart Abiana. However, he is unaware that America has changed during his absence. His once-quiet country is now a psychological battlefield fought over by the Fourth Branch, which governs society, and a clandestine organization known only as Omega. A controversial new technology, poised to transform everything about society, lies at the center of their struggle. Both sides view Victor as the key to their quest, but only time will tell which side he will join in T.B. Kramer's The Fourth Branch.
T.B. Kramer elaborates on Victor's origin story while highlighting the controversial circumstances surrounding his heroic activities, displaying extensive character development. The dialogue oscillates between conversations among Victor's inner circle and intense ideological discussions among supporters of the key factions. The measured pace allows perceptive readers to appreciate the strategically placed clues. Action genre fans will enjoy the intense battle scenes, while romance lovers will appreciate following Victor as he courts Abiana. Elements of Haitian voodoo culture complement the experiments that Victor and his friends go through, appealing to drama and science fiction purists. Kramer combines all these aspects to create a riveting adventure. I enjoyed reading The Fourth Branch and look forward to the next installment of this thought-provoking series.
