The Gallivan Legacy by Sable Lewis follows the story of the Gallivan family from 17th Century Ireland to present day New England. The Gallivan family are witches, each with their own abilities. In Ireland, Ida Gallivan fought against an evil that possessed her husband, trapping it inside a ball of ice and burying it underground. She lost her life in doing so, leaving her infant daughter behind. In the present day, her descendant, Alanna, has a vision of the evil being released and killing two construction workers in Ireland. It soon finds its way to New England in a bid to wipe out the rest of the Gallivans. Alanna, her mother, aunt and cousin Liam must fight this evil using their powers of witchcraft.
Sable Lewis writes a believable teenager in Alanna. The Gallivan Legacy switches viewpoints between Alanna and her crush Brendan, who lives next door to her. Alanna comes across as someone who is comfortable in her own skin and with being a witch. This makes a change from most similar characters thinking they are freaks and denying who and what they are. It gives her confidence. Brendan is your typical American boy, but now that he has finished high school he is starting to look at things differently, including Alanna. The subject of witchcraft is handled well and isn't over the top. It is woven into the story without overwhelming it. This is more of a character-driven story than one about magical powers. A very enjoyable read that would be suitable for young adults.
