In The Girl of Magic and Dreams by Charity Tober, though only twelve, Sophia has unique abilities, being descended from Dream Watchers and infused with magic from the Sandman. Her powers are growing at a slower pace than she wants, and with the Council of Dreamers constantly disapproving of her, she becomes desperate to force her abilities to fully emerge. Her mother’s life depends on it. But the desire to reunite with her mother makes her reckless. Watchers start disappearing as the Shadow Queen, ruler of nightmares, plans to finally free herself from imprisonment and rule the Dream Realm. Sophia is told not to interfere, but as events take a tragic turn, she knows she can make a difference. Will it be enough to stop the queen’s plans?
The intriguing exploration of dreams and nightmares creates a fantastic backdrop for adventure. Charity Tober crafts a reality where anything can happen and places young Sophia at the center of it. The nightmares strike the perfect balance between being threatening but not too scary for younger readers. Part of this is thanks to Tober’s stunning writing, which uses phrases that capture how the dream magic works and the bone-chilling symphony that this world delivers. The coming-of-age journey is based on the choices Sophia makes and the abilities she’s trying to harness. Several characters are part of her journey, but her talking cat, Cosmo, is a true delight and a gentle guide that helps her throughout, whether it’s taking on a nightmare or providing support. At the center of the adventure is the looming threat of the Shadow Queen. The Girl of Magic and Dreams delivers charm, magic, action, and nightmares in an exciting adventure that will be hard to put down.
