Craig Staufenberg's The Girl Who Came Back To Life is the story of a young girl who recently lost her parents. Twelve-year-old Sophie struggles to deal with the loss of her parents, who unexpectedly passed away, sending her to live with her distant grandmother, who is still not over her own husband's death. The family of the dead must release their souls to the City of the Dead in the north. However, Sophie refuses to do so and instead embarks on a perilous journey with her grandmother to the City of the Dead. Along the way, they face many challenges, including hunger, thugs, criminals, fishmongers, and even war heroes. Sophie eventually runs away from her grandmother and learns some crucial life lessons.

The Girl Who Came Back To Life is a captivating story about learning to let go. Author Craig Staufenberg crafts an engrossing narrative, blending coming-of-age experiences with mystery and a sprinkle of magical realism. The book takes you on a slice-of-life adventure following the journey of a twelve-year-old girl and her search for closure. Staufenberg paces the narrative wonderfully, leaving room for readers to absorb the environment and get to know the characters organically. Sophie and her grandmother have a complex relationship. As the story moves forward, Sophie becomes increasingly independent, strikes out on her own, and charts her own course. It's easy to root for Sophie, and you want her to reunite with her family. The ending is bittersweet, but it only enhances the narrative and highlights its core themes beautifully. Highly recommended.
