The Girl Who Makes a Million Mistakes: Dance Practice by Brenda Li is a children’s picture book about a high-spirited girl named Millie who rose to the occasion. When Miss Julianna announces that the class has an exciting dance recital coming up, Millie is absolutely thrilled. Good news: she loves dancing. Bad news: she isn't very good at it. So, she practices day and night, trying not to scratch her nose until she decides she’s ready. On the exact recital day, things go hilariously and heartwarming awry the moment the curtains open. Millie trips, stumbles, and accidentally pulls the curtain down. It was like a recipe for disaster, but Millie is built differently. She always finds a creative way to turn the disaster into something the audience cheers for.

Brenda Li demonstrates a wonderful gift for connecting with young, still-learning readers in The Girl Who Makes a Million Mistakes: Dance Practice. The plot is simple and perfectly paced for its audience. The first stumble builds up to the final bow without a dull moment in between. Millie is a lovable character—imperfect, gutsy, and genuinely funny. She is a character who can empower little girls whenever they go through embarrassment. Millie has a remarkable knack for turning horrid moments into winning moments. That kind of trait is superbly powerful to cultivate in a child. The cheering audience, Millie’s empathetic classmates, and teachers add warmth without stealing the spotlight. The themes of resilience, creative problem-solving, and the courage to keep going even when everything goes wrong are all there. The story has a read-aloud energy that makes every page funny, encouraging, and kind. This is the type of book that will make children giggle from start to finish.
