The Goatman by Wallace Martin, MD, is a young adult mystery that weaves together the coming-of-age journey of Zeb Barton, a fourteen-year-old boy in the 1960s, with elements of suspense, history, and heartfelt moments. The central mystery surrounds the Goatman, a figure of local legend who is said to be responsible for a string of murders. As Zeb and his friends probe into this mystery, the novel shifts between a coming-of-age story and a thriller. The story not only offers readers an exciting mystery but also explores courage, loss, and the power of legends.
Zeb is a relatable protagonist, and Wallace Martin captures the confusion, awkwardness, and curiosity that define adolescence. Zeb’s relationships are varied and vibrant, from the tough-love bond with his workaholic father to his budding friendship with Wanda, the sheriff’s daughter, who brings a sense of wisdom and warmth to the story. Jake and Thelka add to the animated cast of characters. Martin’s prose is clear and engaging, pulling readers into a world where every character feels authentic and every twist in the plot is earned. Anyone familiar with Charles McCartney, the folk legend of Georgia known as the “Goat Man,” or who enjoys the works of Mary Flannery O’Connor and William Faulkner will relish The Goatman. While the story may appeal more to those familiar with Georgia’s legend, it’s a thrilling and quick read for those who love a good mystery and are fans of Southern Gothic literature. Although a coming-of-age novel, it will also appeal to adult readers. Martin's novel is an adventure you won't want to miss.
