The Gobblings by Matthue Roth is a fascinating book for young children. I was immediately drawn by the beautiful pictures in vibrant shades of blue and green. The story line is imaginative as well. Herbie is a space traveler with his parents. Since he is the only child on board, he becomes bored and lonely and this is where the adventure starts for Herbie. He explores every nook and cranny of the space station; tunnels around the walls, the many fascinating switches and lights on the control boards, and the work shop, where he is given a pile of gears to try to build something. And he built some robots, but they were limited in their abilities. Herbie then discovers the Gobblings, a type of space predator. But they didn’t eat people, they only ate metal. This could be a big problem for anyone living in a space station!
Matthue Roth masterfully tells how Herbie solved a big problem caused by the Gobblings. I so enjoyed this book with its detailed and colorful drawings and the unique story line. I believe reading this book could help prepare a child for problem solving in the real world in everyday life. By reading about how Herbie solved a problem, children might be inspired to look for new and creative ways to solve their own problems. I think that early elementary school children would love this book and it could be read to younger children by their parents. Buy The Gobblings for your children and delight their imaginations.
