The Golden Dragon by Mike Shelton is a young adult fantasy fiction that is the first book in The Dragon Artifacts series. This book would appeal most to a mixed audience of males and female tweens and teens who enjoy stories filled with magic and mystical creatures. Eighteen-year-old Roland Tyre is the High Wizard of the Citadel, which is the wizard school and headquarters of wizards, and the best friend of the Dragon King Bakari. Everything changes when Wizard Korax forces his way into a council meeting, demanding to see the Dragon King on behalf of the Oracle of Turg. This demand sets off a chain of events that will impact not only Alaris, but also the Western Continent.
Move over Harry Potter, Eragon, and Dragonriders of Pern and make room for The Golden Dragon (The Dragon Artifacts Book 1) by Mike Shelton! One of the things that I loved about this book right from the very beginning was that it had a full color map that showed all of the important locations in the story. This was such a huge bonus for me because it helped me to get a feel for where the story was taking place in relation to other places and characters. My favorite character ended up being Battlemaster Allison Stenos. I loved her sense of right and wrong, her willingness to fight for what she believes in, and her fierceness in battle. Overall, I found this book to be an enjoyable read that I wish I could have read when I was in middle school as it likely would have become my favorite book/series.
