The Gravy Trane by Charlie Girard is an interesting detective novel about Jack and the Lynches. Jack Trane, a private detective, was having a slow business month. He was sitting in his office when wealthy Alice Lynch walked in and hired him to find her missing husband. While on the job, several attempts were made on his life, but he always escaped. Alice wasn’t so lucky. Jack’s investigation took a fresh turn because he had to find Alice’s killers. Fingers were pointed at her husband and stepson because they had motives for killing her. However, things got interesting when the husband and stepson independently hired Jack to find answers for them. They will eventually learn that all they’d been looking for was right there...
Charlie Girard has written an intelligent detective novel that held my attention from the beginning until the end. The Gravy Trane is a body of work laced with crime, suspense, and humor. I loved the witty, unassuming, yet intelligent character of Jack. Charlie built a character that maintained a steady tempo without being uptight. There were no redundant characters in the story because everyone was valuable, regardless of their roles. The conversational approach to the dialogues made the plot engaging throughout. I loved the uniqueness and depth of the storyline, making it one for the movies. The Lynches deserved each other, and Charlie was meticulous in tying up all the loose ends. No questions were unanswered by the end of the novel! An exceptional book and I’d love to read more from Girard!
