The Great Potato Race! by Donna L. Martin is a children’s picture book that follows Fox as he chases after four runaway potatoes that tumble out of his basket and roll down a hill. Along the way, his friends Mouse, Rabbit, Bear, and Beaver spot the bouncing potatoes and each imagines the delicious dishes they could make if they helped Fox catch them. From Mouse’s delicious soup to Bear’s baked potatoes with all the trimmings, readers are in for a mouth-watering ride. But, despite their best efforts in helping Fox catch his runaway potatoes, the potatoes keep rolling and bouncing out of reach, leading to a wild, laughter-filled chase through the countryside. Fox finally comes up with a clever plan. Will it be enough to stop those tricky potatoes, or will they escape again?
Donna L. Martin has created a fun, engaging, and heartwarming adventure in The Great Potato Race! The pacing moves quickly, helped by the repeating verse “One potato, two potato, three potato, four,” which made it feel like a sing-along. Each animal character added a layer of humor and charm, and Fox’s cleverness gave the story a satisfying twist. Nimra Junaid’s colorful illustrations brought the characters and countryside to life, making every page bright and inviting. Readers who enjoyed similar works such as Laura Numeroff’s If You Give a Mouse a Cookie or Karma Wilson’s Bear Wants More will love The Great Potato Race! for its cheeriness, repetition, and message about sharing and friendship.
