Grifting was just a way of life; it was a family trait, apparently. Lilly and her son, Roy, conceived when she was a child herself, are con artists. And they have skills. Lilly answers to the mob. Roy answers to nobody. He enjoys the lucrative short con, his winnings (if you can call them that) stashed safely behind the clown pictures in his rented flop house suite. It is a well-concealed game that he has got going and those whom he knows through his salesman job would be none the wiser. Greed has a way of attracting wolves and Roy is no different. His choice in women, especially the newest one named Moira, are only after one thing: quick money with little work. Life has a way of catching up, though, and each must face their own music.

"The Grifters" is a spellbinding, fast-paced story from yesteryear. The audio book is read with the urgency, the tension and the suspense that the author must have intended. There is no possible way to just put this one down. There is always a loose string, always a character on the edge of something disastrous. And yet, at the same time, it is entertaining with a few parts that are down right funny!

The feel for the era of the story is well-conceived. Characters are easily visualized and they may even remind the reader of people they know. This is one writer I will personally be following and I can't wait to read the rest of his work!
