"The Gubbins Club: The Legend of Charlie's Gold" written by Melinda Taliancich Falgoust is an exciting adventure Smout McManus sets his sights on. Along the way he acquires unexpected sleuths who come together and join him in the search for a lost treasure once owned by Bonnie Prince Charles. While cramped inside a school locker, thanks to Maddagh, the school bully, he whiles away the time waiting for rescue thinking about his missing parents. Now his Uncle Bernie, scientist/ archaeologist and the only family left, is missing. When Smout receives a mysterious package from his uncle, he begins to unravel the mystery of the hidden treasure. An avid fan of Robert Louis Stevenson’s books, Smout discovers clues left in the author’s works. This spurs him on a journey to find the treasure which he believes will lead him to Uncle Bernie. Smout is torn like a limb in a storm until he finds out those he trusted most are really his enemies.

The book "The Gubbins Club: The Legend of Charlie's Gold" by Melinda Taliancich Falgoust is one that children who love adventure will become immersed in. The action revs up in the second chapter when the story spins her character through a maze of false beginnings that leads to his goal in an unexpected way. Ms Falgoust’s description of each individual puts the reader inside each one throughout the story. Her adeptness at throwing red herrings along the way speaks to children who won’t resist the urge to insist Smout let them in on his quest. Her poignant discovery of how children, as well as adults, can come together in understanding each other through difficult times and the best of times is demonstrated within the most unlikely companions. I think children of this age level will want to read other books about the distinctive Gubbins Club members.
