The Healing Foods by Joey Avniel is an informative book on health and nutrition. This book is written for anyone who wants to improve their health, to find healthy but tasty foods and introduce them into their everyday diet, to stay in control of their weight, and to find alternatives to meat and dairy products. If you ever contemplated the idea of changing your diet but you didn’t know where to start, The Healing Foods is the book for you. Written by 12 experts in their fields - nutritionists, chefs, natural health experts and health counselors - the book presents readers with the benefits of a plant-based diet. Some of the experts have healed themselves with this diet so they don’t talk only from their profession's point of view but from their personal experience which gives the book authority and credibility.
I enjoyed reading The Healing Foods as even though at first it might seem a pleading for a vegan/vegetarian diet, some of the authors are occasional meat eaters and they explain why. The idea of the book is not to convince you to give up meat and animal foods, but to inform readers about the alternatives so they can decide for themselves. The example of the author’s father who lived a healthy life after a heart surgery is very powerful. Through eating healthily and acquiring new eating habits, people can turn their health around despite their genetic inheritance. The book is packed with cooking ideas and recipes, thus making it easy for readers to start replacing some foods and meals straight away. I particularly enjoyed the raw vegan desserts recipes that I can’t wait to try myself.
