The Horse Girl by Sharon Ward-Keeble is a true story. Beverli Rhodes was one of the victims of the London Tube Bombings on 7/7/2005. She suffered some terrible injuries, but perhaps the worst one of all was a return of the flashbacks of her early life. Beverli was loved by her parents, until her sister arrived. Then it was only her father, Peter, who showed her a special kind of love. Beverli was the victim of a high profile pedophilia ring, headed by her own father. Even a move to South Africa did not give her the respite she needed so, when she could, she left home. She married and had three beautiful daughters, but she could no longer deny the direction her sexuality was going in. She met Tina, her soulmate, on the internet; Tina who stood by her through thick and thin, no matter how rough things got. When the UK healthcare system let her down after the bombings, she turned back to the other love of her life – horses. Horses had been a part of Beverli’s life for as long as she could remember and now they were going to save her again. Through pain, horror, heartache, and the revelation of a long-buried family secret, her four-legged friends pulled her through.
The Horse Girl by Sharon Ward-Keeble is an amazing story of strength, courage and love. How one person can go through so much and emerge, stronger than ever, is beyond me and I applaud Beverli for having the courage to fight for her life. The book was very well narrated, with plenty of description to bring it home to the reader. I guarantee that anyone who reads this will be in no doubt as to the pain that Beverli suffered at the hands of her father and his “friends,” and how much she had to go through to finally be free. Amazing story and amazing courage – there really are no other words to describe the impact that this book could have on so many lives.
