The Incredible Adventures of Casper the Cat Who Got Lost in Africa is the fifth book in the series by Jennifer Ussi. Each book features a different African animal in addition to the star, Casper, the house cat. This humorous children’s story has a large cast of both great and small characters, from insects and scorpions to kings of the jungle, lions. Following some comical banter between them, the animals begin strategizing on how to resolve a situation. They decide that strength in numbers is the best strategy to disarm three big-game hunters. Using each animal’s talent, they work together to distract and then deter the unknowing hunters. The author gives personalities to the lions, baboon spiders, scorpions, and even antlions. More than just a cute story, this book is meaningful and includes a short, informative glossary at the end.
Jennifer Ussi captivated me with The Incredible Adventures of Casper the Cat Who Got Lost in Africa. By highlighting the uniqueness of each character based on the species' attributes, she has woven a meaningful tale of courage, teamwork, and positive values with natural dialogue between the creatures. I found this story absorbing, interesting, and educational from the first page. I imagined this tale as a movie featuring these wild animals with such endearing personalities. My favorite character is General Slinkle Snatchalot, from the Sandington Empire, an antlion, who has a flair for the dramatic. In addition to the seamless writing, the beautiful, soft artwork by Lekshmi Bose helps bring this story to life. I wish to be a fly on the wall, or a baboon spider hiding in the African bush, when Casper goes on her next caper.
