In The Island, Kris Leith once again delivers an outstanding thriller that brings back Emery and Dan, while introducing new characters into a world of high stakes, danger, and relentless pursuit. The duo is on a mission to uncover the source of illegal drugs infiltrating New Zealand and its elusive operator. Soon, they are also drawn into the mystery of missing university student Amy Tarrant, a separate case, or so it seems. Meanwhile, Melissa Cross, a DEA agent from Miami, is in New Zealand to follow the same trail of the deadly network. Frustrated by an investigation that seems to be going nowhere, Melissa is uneasy about a local connection, a feeling she can't quite shake, and one her instincts refuse to ignore. As Emery's, Dan's, and Melissa’s paths converge and all clues lead to an island hideout, one question remains: Is Amy’s disappearance linked to the criminal enterprise, and can they find her before time runs out?

In The Island, Kris Leith explores the themes of justice and the personal sacrifices of those who refuse to compromise their integrity. Through Emery and Melissa, he shows that the pursuit of truth often comes at a cost, one we may never fully see or understand. The island setting is the perfect backdrop. It heightens tension, offering no escape, no backup, and nowhere to hide when the truth begins to emerge. I appreciated how this setting deepened the danger and urgency of the story, echoing the larger theme of justice closing in, even in the most remote and guarded places. The interaction between Emery, Dan, and Melissa was compelling, built on an unspoken understanding that even though they had just met, they shared the same passion for justice and a strong will to stand firm in the face of risk. Fans of detective thrillers featuring unconventional heroes with deeply personal moral drives will undoubtedly enjoy The Island.
