In The Kennedy Rule: On Thin Ice (Book 1) by K.C. Carmichael, Connor Kennedy is one of hockey’s brightest stars and a talented center for the Chicago Broad Wings. He is also pressured to live up to his father’s legacy as a former player and the team’s general manager. His rival is Gavin Marshal, the enforcer for the Buffalo Blizzards. He has a reputation for his crushing hits and penalty minutes. Their rivalry has been following them since junior hockey. Gavin goes out of his way to prove that Connor is not better than he is. But Connor’s sports stats say otherwise. When both men hear their names selected to play in the United States Olympic hockey team, it forces them to train together and share rooms during training camp. As tension, personal insecurities, and family pressures surface, will this forced proximity bring out the best or worst in both men?

K.C. Carmichael has created one of the best sports romance novels I’ve read so far. I loved the blend of emotionally layered characters and high-intensity hockey. The story moved briskly between the game action, personal confrontations, and training camp. I wanted to despise Gavin with his tough exterior. However, I began to understand that he was hiding his vulnerability. Connor struggled with identity and family expectations, which made his character just as complex. The author did a great job of showing how both characters’ dynamics evolved from rivalry to a reluctant partnership. I also loved how the adrenaline of the rink was captured. It felt like I was given a V.I.P. pass inside the rink and behind the scenes. Readers who loved similar character-driven hockey romances like Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry would get the most enjoyment out of The Kennedy Rule.
