The Kiev Connection: A Matti James Mystery, Book 2 is a paranormal mystery/thriller written by M.A.R. Unger. Matti is a forensic facial reconstructionist who works part-time with the Clark County Coroner's Office in Las Vegas. When she's not working, she's usually with her private sleuthing club, which specializes in solving cold cases, or hanging out with her neighbor and love interest, the mysterious Joe Chauncey. Matti's life, however, is a bit more complicated than that. Her dog, Fluffy, has the almost preternatural ability to sniff out dead bodies and body parts, and Matti herself is visited by Inbetweeners, dead souls who've not yet passed into the beyond. In fact, one of them, a former Vegas showgirl, Abby Rhode, has become a close friend and confidant. When a flash flood moves a slain woman's body into the wash by Joe's house, Fluffy instantly gives the alarm, prompting Matti and Joe to go searching and find the battered remains. Now, it's up to Matti to reconstruct and help the authorities identify the victim, but someone is determined to hinder her progress.
M.A.R. Unger's mystery/thriller, The Kiev Connection: A Matti James Mystery, Book 2, is a suspenseful and satisfying story that blends the police procedural and paranormal investigator genres. Matti first sparked my interest with her excellent choice of cars, the Lexus LFA, a powerful, throaty and elegant monster, and her childhood training in detecting by her policeman father. When her dive skills were revealed as she was accepted into the Las Vegas Search and Recovery dive team, I became completely hooked on this intelligent, fearless, and very capable sleuth who just happened to also be an accomplished artist and converse with spirits. What else could you ask for in a semi-official private eye? I loved the Vegas desert and the Lake Mead settings and was pleased to discover that Unger provides just a few red herrings for Matti, her group, and the reader to consider. While The Kiev Connection is the second book in the Matti James Mystery Series, I found that the author provided just enough background information to allow me to enjoy this book on its own, but I must confess that I'll be unable to resist going back and reading the first book in this series as well. The Kiev Connection is highly recommended.
