The Kinetix and the Glowing Orb of Gorthon by Austin Basis, Dave Maulbeck, and Josh Taub is an entertaining and original graphic novel. Four middle school students never dreamed that they would one day become superheroes who would end up saving the school. And ultimately, the world, after they defeated Graviton, the villain. Due to the power of the orb that landed on Earth, they join forces, and together they become the Kinetix. They train, fight simulations, and even graduate before they battle the nefarious Graviton. Will the students have faith in themselves and move beyond their handicaps and shortcomings? The story is a mix of action, suspense, fun, laughs, and thrills rolled into one that captures young readers from the start.
I liked the introduction to The Kinetix and the Glowing Orb of Gorthon by Austin Basis, Dave Maulbeck, and Josh Taub. I think young readers will enjoy reading what the different speech bubbles are meant to indicate. The story was expressed very intelligently. The parts of the four characters and how they came to know that they were selected were great. The pictures by Dave Maulbeck were colorful and well-thought-out. Each illustration was structured and formatted excellently to fit the text. I liked the diversity of image sizes. The illustrator skilfully used each space box to its full potential. Many of the pictures were funny. The originality is unmistakable, and I appreciated it. Some of the dialogue was hilarious, especially that with their mentor, Dr. Guttles.
