The Laboratory Assistant by Natalia Loya introduces us to the Solokova sisters, Mariya, Sophia, and Darya. Former aristocrats, they have fallen on hard times after the death of their father. Consumption is running high in the city, and their mother is a victim. In a turn of events, Mariya, the main breadwinner, ends up working for a scientist who is trying to find a cure for consumption. Mariya is an excellent assistant, and before long, the doctor can’t do without her. Her loyalty and love grow for the doctor, but he has a secret. He is sick with a mental illness, which may be his undoing. It’s up to Mariya to keep him grounded to find the cure.
The Laboratory Assistant by Natalia Loya is a great novel. I enjoyed how the author ended the story with such a twist. I never expected it. It is seldom that an author can write a book without you being able to predict what is going to happen. But the author had me guessing; I never saw the twist coming. And after a twist like that, you think it’s over for the characters, but the book ends on an extremely happy note. The author had me hanging on her words with The Laboratory Assistant. I hope to read more books from her in the future. I will read them all. She’s a force to be reckoned with, and I can’t wait to see what’s next. The Laboratory Assistant is really one of the best books I have ever read. It is a book that, in a good way, was not what I expected.
