Herb Marlow has written a provocative and in-depth story about material values from a Christian point of view. In The Laughter of God, Marlow gives the reader an ordinary guy named Bill Harmony. At first glance, Bill is simply a factory worker who does his job. At second glance, Bill is a man who sets about attempting to expose the charlatans in the world of Christianity. There is a church that ministers to the simple folk and the down-and-out people who come across misfortune in life. And then, there is the church in which Doctor Littlehope ministers to those who believe they have a more sophisticated faith than others.
Marlow uses many Biblical lessons when he confronts Littlehope about his pompous and arrogant ways. It immediately sets off alarm bells for readers who wonder just who the factory worker is and what right he has to set others straight. But, the tale is woven in such a clever manner that the reader finds him or herself cheering on the simple man who surfaces as a man of the people. When a television evangelist comes to town claiming to heal others, it raises red flags about the quiet, behind-the-scenes work of simple Bill Harmony.
For those loving Christian books without the preachy tone, this is the book for you! There are both simple and complex lessons about the consequences of greed and a life without God. It is a silent message about materialism vs. spiritualism and about looking towards a person's deeds rather than his or her words. This is a lovely book for young adults and mature adults alike.
