The Letter is a prequel novel from the McLaren Mysteries series by Jo A. Hiestand. Barry Grady is an archaeologist whose humdrum life turns upside down when he receives a letter from his crush telling him that she has married someone else. Soon, Barry leaves Yorkshire for a town in Cumbria called Keswick. But his stay at Keswick turns into a nightmare after he unwittingly finds himself embroiled in a criminal conspiracy that leads to him spending a year in prison. Barry eventually manages to land a job as a church sexton in the village of Moorton once he is out of prison. His humble and hardworking nature makes him popular among the village inhabitants. However, a terrible accident changes everything. Meanwhile, former detective Michael McLaren arrives in Moorton.
I found The Letter to be a very enjoyable character-driven story. Jo A. Hiestand spins a compelling yarn showing how small events in life can sometimes have far-reaching ramifications. Hiestand paces the plot deliberately, making sure the characters stick in the minds of readers long after they have finished the book. Barry is a fascinating character who truly carries the narrative. Despite the hurdles life throws his way, Barry continues to be a kind, humble, and hardworking man. He is easy to like. Personally, I was rooting for him to get his life back on track. I also enjoyed the cameo of McLaren and his brief conversations with Barry. All in all, this is a fantastic addition to the McLaren Mysteries series. I had an absolute blast with it, and you should too!
