Dolly Parton said, “Find out who you are and do it on purpose.” That message is sprinkled throughout The Little Girl with Big Dreams by Sissel Waage. This picture book follows a young girl as she imagines herself all grown up with endless possibilities. As she floats through her own “sea of possibility,” she considers different careers and creative paths. She dreams of becoming everything from a scientist or architect to an artist or writer. Her excitement soon fades as everyone starts giving her advice about her future. Should she keep listening to everyone else, or trust herself instead? And how will she figure out what she truly wants to be?
The Little Girl with Big Dreams by Sissel Waage is whimsical, encouraging, and rather refreshing. The writing is easy for children to understand, but the underlying theme carries real depth for readers of all ages. As an educator, I think it could start great discussions about careers, perseverance, and the importance of listening to your own voice. As an extension, students could write letters to their future selves about what they want to be when they grow up. I also appreciated how the book focuses specifically on girls since they’re not always encouraged to explore jobs in science, architecture, and invention. The illustrations by Ana-Maria Cosma are beautiful, with a fantasy or dreamlike quality that enhances the story's sense of wonder, especially in the use of the blue bubbles. I truly enjoyed this story and its comforting message about finding your own direction in life. Readers looking for a thoughtful, empowering picture book will likely connect with this meaningful and imaginative read.
