The Magical Genes MLK Day Activity Book by Susan Lorraine Kadera offers a simple introduction to Martin Luther King Jr., designed for children old enough to do find-the-word puzzles and write about their dreams. The text describes Martin Luther King Jr. as: “a leader who believed that everyone should be treated with kindness and fairness.” This is not a history book. It does not mention his marches, his protests, his jail time, or any of his political work. The entire focus is on being kind, choosing peace, dreaming big, helping others, and staying curious.

Activities include coloring pages and word searches for words like courage, brave, love, hope, and peace. Children who complete all the activities receive a Certificate of Completion with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr.: “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” This activity book is designed to begin classroom or family discussions of how people can create peace by treating each other with kindness and respect. The drawings feature characters of different races and genders. After completing these activities, children may want to join community activities in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day such as picking up trash or serving meals to the homeless. Or perhaps they will be inspired to develop ways in which they can practice the principles this book advocates in their daily lives. The Magical Genes MLK Day Activity Book is part of a series by Susan Lorraine Kadera that includes other holidays, all centered on the theme of love.
