I really liked The Man of Nightstone by Devon Drake. It is very rewarding to find a story that’s even a little different than the other tales in its genre. The Man of Nightstone is both science-fiction and fantasy. I have seen the two genres mixed before, but rarely has the result been so satisfying. I like gritty. I like action. And I like some mystery and intrigue thrown in to flavor the mixture. Devon Drake served this mixture up beautifully in an excellent novel that has made me an instant fan of this series. The good news for readers is that The Man of Nightstone is the first book in a series called The Nightstone Saga, so you don’t have to read other books to catch up. The bad news is that we have to wait for the second book.

Althadis, the protagonist of The Man of Nightstone, is a bounty hunter and a sorcerer. He is hunting an assassin sorcerer so feared that people are afraid to even talk about him. This is a battle of giants in every way and Devon Drake tells it with a realistic intensity that had me hooked from the first page. The plot is well scripted. The characters are realistically portrayed. But the single aspect that I liked the most was the description of the magic and the science, and the thought behind the magic. There are awesome descriptions of magic battles as well as the down to earth portrayal of a bounty hunter’s life. I look forward to the next book. The entire series may be a potential best seller, depending on the direction that Devon Drake takes it.
