Eleven-year-old Jenny thinks her mother pays more attention to her older brother, Brian, and little sister, Janine. She misses her father who is hospitalised, and often quarrels with her mother who never listens to her. Jenny believes she is a misfit in the family. She decides to retaliate after another family feud and damages Brian’s new bike. Now her mother’s angry again, and Brian ignores her. Jenny goes to the shopping centre and hangs out with Sherry, who has a reputation for doing bad things. Sherry coaxes Jenny to pierce her ears without her mother’s consent, and another problem arises from doing so. Jenny can’t understand why she is an outcast in her own family and just craves a little attention.

Preteens will enjoy reading The Misfit by Margaret Pearce. Some will probably see similarities to their own family issues as the story is very realistic. The characters behave like typical kids with varying temperaments. The plot is well developed and interesting, with good dialogue. Margaret Pearce creates a story that has a subtle message stating that it is what you feel on the inside that matters, and not what you look like. She shows how children can be influenced into doing stuff they know is wrong. It is also on the humorous side because of a few things Jenny does to attract attention. The book cover is terrific, very original, and complements the story. This book makes a pleasant read.
