The Missing Branch is the fifth book in A Bulwark Anthology by Kay MacLeod. This is the story of Izzie Murray who started researching her family history, but it has now become an obsession for her. However, things take a serious turn when she finds out that there is a huge gap in her family tree. Surprised and wanting to know more, she packs her bags and travels to Bulwark, Georgia to find out why a whole branch of people is missing from her family tree. However, when she reaches Bulwark, she cannot help but feel that the place is strange. No one is willing to talk to her except Matt, and finding out what went wrong with this branch of her family is proving to be far more difficult than she ever thought. There is something about this town that doesn’t sit right with her, but Izzie is not going to stop until she finds out.
The world-building is perfect in this novella. I enjoyed how the author built a very believable and mysterious community where everything demands your attention. Izzie is the perfect protagonist for this story; she is curious, determined and ready to take action. I enjoyed her reactions the most; they were believable, understandable and real. It made the story more enjoyable and entertaining. Her growth was something to see, to be honest. I hope the author has more planned for Izzie because she is just perfect. There is nothing that I would wish the author to change in this book. A suspenseful and entertaining story.
