In Som Phin’s The Naga Sisters Chronicles, six Cambodian American sisters travel to Cambodia, their late mother’s homeland. During a sunrise visit to Angkor Wat, eldest sister Chanda Seang remembers the stories their mother told about naga guardians and the princess who helped establish a kingdom. A road accident leaves Chanda and her five sisters awakening underwater in the bodies of six naga princesses, inside a palace from an era before Cambodia’s founding. The Naga King explains that a prophecy connects their arrival to the emergence of land above the water, with each sister expected to choose a partner from the human world. As a foreign prince approaches the kingdom, Chanda faces a court divided over the prophecy, while her sisters discover magical abilities and the demands of their borrowed royal identities.

Som Phin’s The Naga Sisters Chronicles is incredible mythic fantasy, and its underwater kingdom is majestic and dangerous. Chanda is loyal and remarkably compassionate, diverting scalding liquid from Mony, a kitchen worker’s daughter. I love Sokha, Chanda’s spirited sister, whose courage is tremendous when she reverses a gallery current to protect those inside. Phin’s world building is massive and much of it comes through social status within the royal court. For example, senior nobles wear heavy gold belts that announce their rank before anyone speaks. Still, it’s Phin’s near-cinematic descriptions of landscapes that shine brightest, from palace gardens with branching coral arches and kbach-shaped plantings, to the festival’s great hall, where ancient patterns cover living coral walls. Beautifully written and bold, readers who enjoy fierce sisters caught inside royal schemes will adore this.
