After fighting the apocalypse aftermath in “Human Instincts”, she played with shapeshifters in “Blue Moon Café Series: Where Shifters Meet for Drinks”, she dealt with vampires in “The Impaler Legacy” series, and then she designed prosthetics in “Broken People” before tackling longer works like a fantasy trilogy and a science fiction series.

She received the Encouragement Award from The European Science Fiction Society at Eurocon 2013.

The Nightingale Circus by Ioana Visan is a short story collection in the Broken People series. It tells the story of the fascinating members of the circus. We learn about their past, how they ended up at the circus and the work that they do, as well as their relationships between each other. With beautiful and intriguing cover art, it didn't take long for me to fully immerse myself in this book.

The collection opens with The Nightingale. Cielo’s singing voice is not just beautiful, but has a power to enchant. This leads some people to fear her, and she’s constantly in danger of being kidnapped by people who want to use her ability for their own purposes. She makes a painful decision in order to be free from the dangers and her own fear. In The Blade Masters, worn-out soldiers Rake and Spinner turn their lives around when they meet Big Dino, owner of the Nightingale Circus. The story goes on introducing Nicolas the Magician, Anya the Swan, Riella the Firebird, Fei Lin the Rocket Girl, and Aurore the Golden Lady.

The Nightingale Circus is not just about biological rarities, physically unusual humans, or people with other extraordinary abilities. Each member of the circus is an interesting individual with relatable sentiments, despite their extraordinary condition. It has so much to savor: the familiar yet freshly spun cyberpunk theme, and an original storyline boosted by fine prose. Ioana Visan certainly delivers a superb prequel to Broken People, which I absolutely look forward to reading.
