In Dr. Paul L. Sasser’s The Oagenn, Nathanael Livanos has lived for centuries by hiding what he is: an Oajinn who does not age like ordinary people, but his hidden life ends when his brother El-Jy’een begins hunting the ancient rings that can alter the balance of power among their kind. El-Jy’een already has the Ring of Chaos, which lets him command destruction through landbound force, so Nathanael must reach the Ring of Intuition before him. With Maria, his long-lived partner, Nathanael leaves Nantucket as El-Jy’een’s agents close in, then the danger reaches their son Alexander. The search moves from American harbors to Caribbean waters, from a South Carolina plantation to an Italian oracle, as Nathanael tries to keep the next ring from his brother’s hands.
Dr. Paul L. Sasser’s The Oagenn refers to a secret deathless people living among humans, including Nathanael Livanos, a ship captain born in 1630. Nathanael is easy to champion as a protagonist desperate to keep his family beyond his brother’s reach. Sasser shows us that beyond this, he is also protective of others. In a Charleston shipyard, he reveals his nonhuman strength to stop falling timber from killing workers. I love Maria, who is sharp and strong. She isn't a woman who waits for a man to take care of things. She's ready with a rifle aboard schooners, and racing into houses to save the family books. Sasser's prose is gorgeous, and I could visualize Skellig Michael, an island that rises from the Atlantic as two dark peaks, where small dry-stone monk huts sit behind low walls above the sea. Well written and immersive, historical fantasy readers and lovers of seafaring danger will adore this.
