The Osborne Legacy by Mark Cundy is a fun read that takes you on a treasure hunt spanning several continents. Michael Osborne, a British multimillionaire, is dying without heirs and wants to leave a million pounds to someone, a randomly selected stranger. Having worked hard all his life for his money, Osborne isn’t one to make it easy for anyone else, so he devises a competition for the chance to live the good life. There are six clues to follow, each leading to the next, which will direct the final five contestants selected towards the legacy. Not all will make it to their destination as the competitors encounter more than they bargained for, and keeping their wits about them to decipher each clue becomes secondary to staying alive for some.
Mark Cundy has incorporated many twists and turns to keep The Osborne Legacy interesting. His prose generally keeps a quick pace, though at times the book delves more into the travelogue genre than suspense adventure, as the author pauses the action to admire the scenery and architecture of his distant destinations. Although probably interesting to a tourist, these details slow the pace and suspend the reader’s involvement in the action. Nonetheless, Cundy presents a fun afternoon read that follows fairly developed characters as they battle moral and ethical dilemmas and each other to be the ultimate winner. Up until the very end, it is anyone’s guess as to who the winner will be and Cundy delivers a final twist in grand style.
