David the Englishman migrated to Mexico when a couple of friends invited him to manage their restaurant. After a visit to a clairvoyant and a long deliberation, he finally decided that he will go to Mexico and try it out. Many things happened to David in Mexico, including losing a friend to AIDS, meeting a best friend who is also HIV+, and living with a young man that eventually became infected with AIDS. The Party’s Over by David J. Cooper tells the real life story of David and the people he met that were diagnosed with a disease that, until a few years ago, was fatal. Now with the advances in medicine, people diagnosed with HIV can have longer lives.

David’s life was full of tragedy; I don’t know how he survived mourning one friend because of a disease that would take yet another friend. I am happy that David is strong and very loyal. There were many times that he could have cut Cisco out of his life, because it was as if he didn’t want to help himself, but David stood by him all throughout the course of his illness.

This book shows that when The Party’s Over, we will have to face the consequences of our actions. Some may come out of it unscathed but some, like Cisco, can get AIDS. What I like about this book is that it spreads awareness about AIDS. David J. Cooper shows that even if you have this deadly disease, by taking your medication religiously and having regular medical checkups, you can still live a normal life. Your life doesn’t have to revolve around the disease.
