The Phantom of Valletta by Vicki Hopkins is a work of historical mystery fiction. You know the story of the Phantom of the Opera, now you will learn the truth behind the famed Garnier Opera House in France and what happened on that fateful evening when so much tragedy struck. The reader meets the Opera Ghost as he, now called Erik Dante, and his two companions arrive in Malta. Erik has purchased the burned-out shell of the Royal Opera House in Valletta with plans to rebuild the house and to once again give society the culture, music, and passion that he holds so dear. Erik needs money to rebuild, so he hosts a masquerade, inviting the upper classes. During the masquerade, Erik can walk among the guests. He remains unnoticed until a woman approaches him, offering the future he desires. As time passes, threatening letters begin arriving, keys and building plans go missing, and ropes are found cut, bringing back horrible memories of the Garnier and the devastation there. Erik occupies his time with a new protégé. Désirée is fascinated by Erik, she finds his violin playing hypnotic. As he plays, she knows her heart belongs to him. Will Erik allow himself to love Désirée, or will he remain a prisoner of his love for Christine Daaé? Will Erik have to pay for his crimes against humanity, or will he be able to change his path and find love?

An incredible book you will not want to put down; you will thirst for more of the story of The Phantom of Valletta by Vicki Hopkins. I found the story of Erik Dante captivating. Hopkins uses great visualization in her writing. You will see Erik Dante in his full costume protecting him from the world; the Opera House as it rises from the ashes, and the emotions that run through the main characters as they perform, live, love, and experience the highs and lows of life. The story developed brilliantly, leaving me wanting nothing more from the author. I applaud the talents of Vicki Hopkins and recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, historical pieces, romance, and The Phantom of the Opera. This book will forever change how you feel about Erik Dante. An exceptional story. Bravo!
