In Aaron Ryan’s The Phoenix Experiment, Jax wakes aboard the sentient science vessel The Origin, where he and other adolescents are included in the Phoenix Experiments; controlled dreamlike sessions meant to reconnect them with deceased loved ones. The arrival of new survivors from the destroyed ship The Zephyr, including Omnias and Zaris, leads to issues and changes aboard the vessel. Jax observes troubling behavior by the synthetic officer Stygius Cryptus during the experiments, particularly incidents involving Zaris, and begins investigating potential risks. Together with his peers, Jax works through the ship’s systems, routines, and security protocols while monitoring the growing threat posed by Cryptus and a mysterious, malevolent presence emerging within the Phoenix Experiments. Jax’s efforts to understand and respond to these dangers amplify as he and the group maneuver through the ship’s environment to protect themselves and the others in the program.
Aaron Ryan’s The Phoenix Experiment rests on a really unique premise and delivers a bold and wonderfully suspenseful storyline. I love the use of sentient starships and the way that Ryan integrates this succinctly into a plot where the line between dreams and reality blurs, especially with a robust cast of young, intelligent characters, is a testament to his skill as a writer. Navigating both discovery and danger, the plot never loses its forward momentum. Aside from questionable moral issues, Stygius Cryptus and the haunting Phoenix sessions are spectacular drivers of the fast pacing, all elevated with the well-timed catalyst of The Zephyr and the arrival of its survivors. Along with the new cast and fresh energy, the shifting alliances and simmering conflicts on The Origin are baked into the claustrophobic environment that is cinematic in its depiction. Overall, this is an electrifying tale that balances imagination, intensity, and heart, leaving readers eager for what lies ahead. Very highly recommended.
