Nani is a young girl and badly injured when she is brought to Dr. and Mrs. Miller, missionaries in an isolated part of Brazil. Nani doesn't know who she is or anything about her past. The stranger who brought her tells the Millers that he will return, but it is several years before he does return and, during that time, the Millers have accepted Nani as their own daughter. A group of teenagers arrives to help at the mission and the first errand takes them on a treacherous journey down a mountain road with Nani driving. They are spooked and the vehicle goes over the cliff, but they land in a place far away from Brazil. In fact, it is far away from Earth and there are evil forces looking for the group, especially for Nani.

The Pillar of Light is the first book in a series by Anna Travis. Six young people, plus Nani, find themselves on an adventure to set things right in a world, Milana, gone astray by fighting the forces of evil. Much like C.S. Lewis' stories about Narnia, the young people find themselves in a world other than their own with a challenge they must face in order to save themselves, but also to destroy the evil forces. Like Lewis, the author of The Pillar of Light parallels parables from the Bible to develop her plot. This is an exciting story for young people, a story about faith, love and the power of friendship as they work together to combat the many forces of evil.
