The Prodigals by Clark Rich Burbidge is book two of the Giants In The Land series, a fantasy/sci-fi series that also teaches Christian morals and is suitable for readers of all ages. Book one of the series featured the character of Thomas as he investigated the disappearance of all the giants from his land. In this new sequel, we are reunited with Thomas as a much older man, now accompanied by his young grandchildren on a new and dangerous adventure. What follows is a tale of pillage, kidnap, rescue and a lesson to be learned about the importance of family.
Clark Rich Burbidge writes highly readable prose which is accessible to all ages, yet also authentic in its pseudo-medieval fantasy style. Whilst younger readers may need adults to read along with them, this chapter book teaches heart-warming lessons about what family should mean to a young person whilst also delivering an exciting and sometimes tragic plot. The fantasy element of the plot is also dealt with convincingly with vivid descriptions and interesting cultures and customs. The Prodigals is an exciting continuation to the series which introduces readers to more of the delightful giants who fulfil their duties in the forest and presents an exciting battle between good and evil. This highly moral tale is also presented beautifully and includes lovely illustrations that are sure to capture the reader’s imagination. The sneak peek for book three of the series at the end of this volume also suggests yet more adventure from this skilled author, which I look forward to seeing.
