The last words twenty-four-year-old Delilah heard from her mother were, “Go to Hell.” Despite their strained relationship, Delilah never thought her mother meant it literally. After being trampled to death by a horse, Delilah wakes up to the sight of a building that could pass for any old-fashioned hotel in London. A lift attendant and receptionist tell her she is at the Purgatory Hotel for Wayward Ghosts, a temporary resting place for people who lived middling lives, where they face their final test to decide if they go to Heaven or Hell. After several attempts, Delilah is finally promoted to Heaven. But as she heads there, the lift breaks down in the Limbo section. It turns out the hotel is slowly falling apart. To reach her destination, she must team up with others to find the entity behind the hotel’s design and help fix the problem before it’s too late. Will Delilah and her newfound friends pull it off? Find out in The Purgatory Hotel for Wayward Ghosts by Katy Nyquist.
If you are looking for a contemporary fantasy that blends supernatural comedy with paranormal romance and parody, The Purgatory Hotel for Wayward Ghosts by Katy Nyquist is a perfect pick, based on the idea of life after death. Nyquist introduces readers to a bureaucratic afterlife world featuring an eccentric cast. The hotel not only has a receptionist who handles the accommodation and scheduling of ghosts for their trials, but also different levels for hosting them based on their worst sin. I found the maintenance crew a funny bunch, and they mirror some real-world workers. They show up every day but barely do what is expected of them. And if it gets them away from work, they will neglect their duties and gladly invite chaos, including rioting. Delilah’s time at the hotel is one of healing, finding true friendship, acceptance, and love. She must embrace her skills to save her friends and the hotel. I enjoyed Nyquist’s witty commentary on modern work culture, the often absurd nature of bureaucracy, and family relations.
