The Reader by M.K. Harkins opens with three words, “I am dead.” A gun shot wound, no memory, and two strangers are just a few of the things that greet Ann Baker when she wakes up on a beach. Quickly, she finds herself thrown into a world of mind-readers, body hijackers, prophecies, and the unsettling prediction that she may be the one they've all been waiting for – the Lost One. The one destined to find her Soul Mate and trigger a final war that will end the centuries-long struggle between the Jacks, and the Readers. Faced with confusing feelings, lies, and a betrayal, Ann struggles to discover the truth of her past. To save the future, Ann is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice.

The Reader is addictive, captivating, with charm, snarky characters, and a compelling mystery. You can't just read one chapter. M.K. Harkins writes a story that can't be put down until you've reached the end. This is aimed at young adults, but everyone can find a thread to enjoy. It's humorous, witty, a little romantic, with an intriguing premise. Told from Ann's perspective, The Reader keeps you guessing until the very end. Just when I thought I knew exactly how ended, it flips at the last second. When Ann is introduced, she's easy to sympathize with, because she's lost, confused, injured, and the memories she regains further the reasons to feel for her. Though, this isn't what makes her likable or a strong lead. She's stubborn, flawed, snarky, independent, she doesn't let anyone push her around, and she's fiercely loyal. These aspects add to the tone of the story, and the personality of Harkins' writing. A must-read!
