In Wade Prull’s Black Tank, Gary is a former infrastructure specialist who has spent four years traveling alone in the motorhome he chose with his wife Claire. At Ridgeline State Park, the afternoon light matches a place Claire once circled in their road atlas, but a failing black tank valve leaves Gary at the dump station longer than his strict procedure permits. His past includes water contamination reports he knew were false and a settlement that paid for his life on the road. As Gary monitors a retired teacher nearby, the park host records his movements. A man in a gray motorhome appears to recognize Gary’s technical knowledge. Gary must decide whether to begin another managed departure or remain at the station as the evidence surrounding his travels brings officials closer.
Wade Prull’s Black Tank follows Gary through forty minutes at a dump station, and makes every technical detail part of what Gary has carried for four years. This is a fantastic psychological thriller, and Prull takes us deep into the engineering language. I loved the maintenance tips that end each chapter because their instructions gradually show how Gary has applied systems thinking to his own life. The man from the gray motorhome recognizes Gary’s field experience from his handling of the failed valve, and his pause after Gary claims to have sold medical equipment shows he knows the answer is false. In fact, all the ancillary characters have distinct roles and personalities, and add to the story. For example, the park host plays an important role through her emergency nursing experience and written observations. If Baker’s The Mezzanine and Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day had a book baby, Black Tank would be it! Just brilliant.
