When eight artists from varying backgrounds receive the same letter inviting them to an all-expenses paid art residency, which includes a competition offering a five-hundred-thousand dollar prize to the winner, they assemble at the airport against their better judgment. The residency promises to help them hone their craft, but all the artists use different styles and mediums, leading a few to become suspicious. Arriving at Turquoise Bay Island in the Bahamas, they are initially impressed by the Curator’s mansion, but when their electronics are taken overnight and they are escorted to a bunker, their wariness proves valid. Inside the underground bunker of horrors is a myriad of deadly contraptions and the only way out is to survive the Curator’s challenges. Kayla Frederick’s horror novella, The Residency, is reminiscent of movies in the Saw franchise.
Fans of horror, splatterpunk, and psychological suspense will enjoy this fast-paced story. With each chapter told from one of many points of view, the reader gets to know each character sufficiently without too much time being wasted on character development. This keeps the action and tension high throughout this explosive tale. Knowing that only one participant can claim the cash prize, you will find yourself trying to guess which one will win and the lengths they will go to ensure their victory. The Residency is not for the faint of heart; oozing with gore and graphic descriptions, it is best suited to a mature audience. I really enjoyed Kayla Frederick’s book and am excited to read her backlist.
