The River Keeper and Other Tales by Nancy Joie Wilkie is an anthology consisting of seven stories set in the Kingdom of Imlay. In The River Keeper, Ya discovers the Great River is dying and sets out with a group of villagers to find the mythical River Keeper, believed to have the ability to heal the river’s illness. In A Dream for a Dream, Lar and other children in a village begin experiencing dreams that reveal past lives, leading them to uncover the cause of their memory loss and separation from adults. In The Innkeeper, a stranger suffering from memory loss arrives at an inn, where he learns about his past life and a spiritual journey he must take. Each story features characters who encounter challenges related to their roles in the world, their pasts, and their futures.

Nancy Joie Wilkie's The River Keeper and Other Tales is an incredible assortment that leans into her talent for mixing rich, evocative prose with thoughtful and wonderfully imaginative storylines. The writing is elegant in its classic style, and even though each story is set within the same domain, they are so individually textured and unique that they could very well be set anywhere. The standout story to me is The Day After Tomorrow, which masterfully portrays the desire of a king to unnaturally control his future through magical visions, especially regarding his love for Wynneth. There is a price to pay, though, and it is huge. I love that Wilkie allows us to experience the kingdom through the lens of different individuals, proving that when put in the hands of a talented author, a shorter story can still pack a big punch.
