The Robokid is a science fiction novella by Thomas Chiang. At just fourteen, Eric Miller is already a gifted programmer. After his father gifts him the latest version of the popular family robot, RoboKid, Eric can't wait to personalize its attributes, and he names it Tiger. He goes on to win the world's first RoboKid Olympics in New Orleans. However, the founder of RoboKid is the mysterious Dr. T, who has plans of his own. Seeking revenge, he turns humanity's most advanced toys against them. But Eric discovers something that may just offer a ray of hope. As civilization threatens to crumble with the designs of a mad scientist, is there any way to stop him?
What happens if the machines turn against humanity? The Robokid is a captivating tale of losing control over one's own creation. With the rise of AI in recent years, this book couldn't be more relevant. It's fast-paced and full of unexpected twists and turns. I liked that author Thomas Chiang didn't waste a word, putting the reader into the scheme of things from the very first few pages. In fact, I was enjoying the book so much that I read it in one sitting. I think many others will probably do the same. Eric is the kind of protagonist both young and older readers are going to love. He is talented, driven, and tenacious, never letting anything or anyone stand in his way if he sets his mind to accomplish something. I also loved his dynamic with Tiger. Overall, it's a fantastic sci-fi story for all readers.
