The Rooster in the Drive Thru by Peggy Badgett is a warm and funny look at the author’s life as she moves from her small-town childhood to the busy world of motherhood in the suburbs. The book is a collection of true stories about growing up in the rural Midwest, working in her family’s health food store, going to college, and then starting a family of her own. Badgett shares memories of playing outside as a child, learning responsibility in her father’s store, and later, juggling the chaos of raising three young kids and two lively dogs. The book shows the ups and downs of parenting, the challenges of leaving a career for family life, and the struggle to find a sense of belonging in a new place. Through all the changes, Badgett’s love for her family and her sense of humor shine through, making each chapter feel real and relatable.
I enjoyed how Peggy Badgett writes in a simple, honest way that makes you feel like you are sitting with a friend, listening to her stories. The events move smoothly from one stage of her life to the next, and the pace keeps things interesting without feeling rushed. There are plenty of funny moments and a few touching ones, too, especially when she talks about her children and her dogs. The characters—her kids, her husband, and even the pets—are described with warmth and detail, making them easy to picture. The themes of family, change, and finding joy in everyday life are clear and meaningful. I found myself smiling and nodding along, remembering my family moments. The Rooster in the Drive Thru is perfect for anyone who enjoys true stories about family, laughter, and the little adventures that come with everyday life
